THE ACT OF CREATING….IS IT IMPORTANT?
Posted on | March 22, 2010 | 6 Comments
How important is the act of creating to you? Is it a casual occurrence or are you driven to create? When you create do you feel a peace inside? I have a friend, Kathy Wallace, who’s motto is “Make Art or Die”. ( Kathy’s website is http://www.makeartordie.com ) This statement may seem extreme but when you think about it, it is our creative desires that make us whole. Without this wholeness we are but an empty shell going through the act of living.
The Tao Te Ching teaches personal empowerment. Tao means the journey of our lives, Te means our essential nature and Ching means a sacred book, It is made up of three characters “to go” ” straight” and “the heart.” The Tao is a journey of discovery and fulfillment that comes straight from the heart.
To create we allow our heart to be open …wide open. Having our hearts open also requires us to be centered. Being centered means that we stay in touch with who we are at a deeper level. It means becoming more aware of our own energies, values, and priorities. We as artists are the luckiest people in the world. We have the privilege of going within and finding out just who we are. Our creations reflect no only who we are but how we think and feel.
So, when you go into your studio how important is the act of creating to you? Is it just a job or do you feel you must create or die.

The act of creating is hugely important to me. I have been creating, whether through art or craft, in some form or another since I was a toddler. It is as much a part of me as life itself, and I just couldn’t imagine not creating.

Roberta….thanks for the comment…I couldn’t agree more. Creating is life truly life itself. I went to your site and love your work. “Going Nowhere reminds me of a Andrew Wyeth painting and “The Air that I breath” is a scene from my childhood. Great Work !!!,

Hello Gwen, thank you for another wonderful, thought-provoking post.
I, without a doubt, fall into the category of art and creativity being a life force for me. I make art because I can’t NOT make art. When something keeps me from creating, I am not a nice person to be around. I also find, the more creative I am in the studio, the more it spills out into other aspect of my life. It clearly isn’t something only focused on my painting. I like to think of it as living in a web where everything impacts everything else.

Kim….I get grumpy too when I am not able to create. Love the fact you mentioned about how your creativity enhances your everyday life. How great is that!

Create art and live! My art is my life. They are one and the same. I’m at my essence when being creative. I’m at my most spiritual(most times) when I’m creating. Creativity is a life force that I need. In times past when I’ve not been acting on this force I am unhappy, stressed, have bad dreams and not centered at all. Art is life.

@Debora Stewart, Interesting that you mentioned “you are centered when creating art”….how true for all of us. Even when things are not going our way while painting we still have that feeling of belonging. Thanks for your comment.
