WHEN ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

Posted on | March 24, 2010 | 24 Comments

OK, I’m mad.  I realize this is an art blog and should be inspirational but today is different. I am mad at what is going on in America.  The health care bill was passed but some are reacting like spoiled children.  Didn’t their Mothers explain to them there is a “give and take” in our lives and what we view as right and wrong?  The violence that is being promoted by those who stand by and are unwilling to accept responsibility for their actions are pathetic.  They are saying from the sidelines “go for it” but in public they deny any participation.  Does that constitute cowardice  to you?

The health care bill passed.  Was it perfect….NO.  Did it do everything I wanted it to do…NO. Is it a start for a better tomorrow….YES!  Maybe you agree but maybe you don’t …. that is what America is about.  But violence to  prove our point….I don’t think so.  I thought we were smarter than that.

How quickly we forget when the fight for “Womens Right to vote” exploded in the political arena.  I wasn’t part of it and neither were you but we have a lot to thank for our sisters who gave so much so we can vote…imagine not being able to vote because you are a woman!!!!!

Then came the” Civil Rights Movement“,  Black and whites gave their lives to insist that blacks should have the same privileges as those of us who were born white. The outrage was fierce.  I know, I lived in the South at that time.  Those who chose to change a wrong to a right had  intense, powerful courage .

No Sarah, we shouldn’t “Reload”, we should sit back, realize the power of words to those who are prone to violence.  Take time to do things in a positive way, a way that will benefit our country….perhaps a thoughtful walk for peace and compassion for others.  Reload…..no, I don’t think so Sarah.  It is time to step back and remember that change is difficult….and change is the one thing that is always constant.  Is change good?….your choice… but violence camouflaged  as right is never the correct choice.

I think some people decide to take a position and then just bark and bark in hopes that they will get noticed. In the end you are right, they end up looking like spoiled children.

Thank you thank you thank you Gwen for saying all this. It needed to be said.

I too am angry at those who kept saying that elections had consequences when my side lost but now can’t take it when they lose.

It is time for all of us to be adults and take responsibility for our actions.

@Ann Brauer, Adults, did you say Adults….don’t think they know the meaning of that word.

Yeah! What you said! These people are petulant children. Let them go pout in the corner.

@Davida, Don’t we wish we could send them to the corner!

    @gwen,
I want them in the corner with a time-out for the next 50 years so the mess made by their instigators can be cleaned up. We might then undo the rude lessons they have so well learned and give them some classes in critical thinking. Then they can actually engage the world in a civil manner and we can get some work done. So there! (Raspberries implied)

I admire your speaking out here.

I have had a certain amusement with Sarah Palin and her “you betcha” home town affect.

    I think she is dangerous.

When she puts certain states on her Facebook page depicting the aiming site from a gun targeting our well meaning legislatures – and they get death threats against their wives and children -

There must be a way to silence her.

She is encouraging all the crazies.

We had plenty of them before that.

I am horrified this is happening in our Country. I am scared.

    Is nothing sacred?

@Corinne Edwards, Sarah Palin is dangerous…you are correct. She is dangerous because she is an empty vessel that can be filled by anything or anyone willing to actualize her financial desires.

    Hi Gwen
I think as artists we have a responsibility to our community to observe and comment on what goes on around us. Maya Angelou and James Baldwin come to mind, as do Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. So your post here on this topic is quite natural and refreshing!

The violence and threats are very disturbing to me, especially since recent polls say a slim majority of Americans approve of the plan. I really don’t get it…

@Gayle Mahoney, Following is easy….change is hard.

I agree, Gwen. Think how much more progress we’d make if we focused on collaboration rather than battle!

    gwen Reply:

@Sue Martin, Unfortunately, collaboration would require we set aside our ego.

I see things shifting and those who have been in power for so long are trying all tactics to keep this power and are becoming desperate. I believe racism, homophobia and intolerance are stoking the fire. That is my opinion.

@Debora Stewart, I couldn’t agree with you more. Fear is a wonderful tool to use when we have nothing else to offer.

I agree with you Gwen.. it’s a beginning. It sounds like people don’t like change, they would rather resort to violence, stay in their rut or pout!

It’s pretty sad for a wealthy country that there isn’t health care, unless you buy it like auto insurance. Your Health is #1. You can replace your auto, your health is hard to replace.

Is it expensive? Yes, it will be. Aren’t you worth it? We all are..The health bill is just the beginning, each initiative will improve over time.

    Thank you for getting mad.

@Mari-Lyn Harris, …change is hard for people to accept. They don’t like getting out of their comfort zone….it is easier to follow than to think for themselves.

Amen Sister! I have been spewing this same rant to anyone who will listen to me all week (even the roof man)! In my mind, the biggest reason these people look like spoiled children is because (well, they are) not any of their objections make any sense at all! Since I can remember (I am in my 50′s), very little has been accomplished in this country (except we made a fast decision to go to war, didn’t we?).

As for Sarah and company – good grief, they terrify me with their tactics and poor judgments.

I applaud you for speaking out. This is your blog, you are an artist and I can bet this passion will probably show up in a painting somewhere!

Well said Gwen, I’m sharing your views completely. Hate brings only bad things. I wish more people would really think for themselves before they say something, and try to look at the broader picture, instead being carried away by ill words from opportunists like Sarah Palin.

    [Reply]

    gwen Reply:

@Mirjana Cesar, I’m afraid Sarah Palin isn’t aware of the weight of words. She says and moves on without thought or caring.
